exiii has developed a “touchable-CAD” 3D design review tool

exiii Inc. (exiii) has developed a 3D design review tool, which allows designers to touch and feel work-in-progress CAD data, through a haptic wearable device, “EXOS.” Since 2017, Nissan has started actively integrating VR into their car design development process. As part of this initiative, the Nissan Global Design Center is introducing this system to enable a more realistic product reviewing experience.

 

By integrating EXOS into VR, designers will be able to better intuitively review designs as a result of having both visual and touch interfaces. For example, designers will be able to make sure if the distance between seat and handle is appropriate, check whether all the buttons are easily accessible and controllable, and etc.

 

This new solution will provide designers with benefits such as making it possible to find out potential problems at the early stages of development, shorten the design process, and minimize the design-reality gap.

 

 

 

 

With this announcement, on Feb 28th, exiii has released 2 types of wearable haptic devices “EXOS Wrist DK1” and “EXOS Gripper DK1.” exiii welcomes partners and developers from across the world in order to accelerate the development of XR-related content, specifically for business use cases.

 

 

EXOS Wrist DK1

1. About

By applying counter force to 2 directions, palmer / dorsal flexion and radial / ulnar abduction, EXOS Wrist simulates haptic feedback when a user touches virtual objects. EXOS Wrist can be used with VIVE Controller or Oculus Touch, which will make it easy for developers to transform existing VR contents to touchable experience. In addition to assigning haptics to virtual objects, developers can also assign “event-base haptics,” such as shooting a gun and pushing a button, which will be good use cases for interactive contents including gaming. The development kit will come with a SDK for Unity and ensure developers have a tool to create haptics-enabled XR content.
